What is Psychotherapy?

Often referred to as the "talking cure," psychotherapy is a treatment modality for psychological or relationship difficulties whereby a therapist and client meet regularly to explore the nature of the client's troubles in an effort to relieve psychological symptoms (depression, anxiety, etc.) and to improve life satisfaction. There are several different approaches to therapy.

The type of therapy that I provide is called psychodynamic, or insight-oriented, therapy. It is based on the assumption that we are only partially aware of our thoughts and feelings, and that much of our motivation for behaving and feeling the way we do is unconscious (outside of our awareness).  For example, people often come to therapy saying, "I don't know why I can't stop overeating" or "I don't know why I keep ending up in bad relationships" or "I have everything I want in life.  I don't know why I'm not happier."  It's not that these people are not intelligent enough to solve their dilemmas--it's that aspects of themselves that are unconscious are often driving their behavior and their experience of the world.

Working collaboratively with you, I can help you to gain a deeper understanding of yourself, which in turn will allow you to make better decisions for yourself.  Psychodynamic psychotherapy not only helps to relieve symptoms, but often results in better relationships and improved satisfaction with one's life. As you know yourself better, you are free to create the life you wish to have.
